Auto-match rules that hide classification errors

Green ticks are not evidence. How to sample force-matches and rule hits before they bury misposts.

Bank feeds and matching engines are useful. They are also confident. A rule that matches on amount alone will happily pair the wrong customer receipt with the right-looking invoice total.

Sample both auto-matched and force-matched lines each period. Ask: was the reference sufficient, was the counterparty correct, and did the ledger coding match the nature of the cash movement? A short cover note on exceptions turns a silent match into usable evidence.

Watch for rule creep — new payment processors, marketplace payouts, and card settlements often need dedicated rules. Without them, they land in suspense and age until someone invents a classification under pressure.

If your matching log cannot explain overrides in under a minute per line, schedule statement matching assurance before the next external review.
